Three Ways to Build Self-Discipline

Self-discipline is the foundation of most great achievements. Whether you’re aiming to get fit, build a new habit, or achieve a long-term goal, self-discipline is the key to turning your dreams into reality. Building self-discipline can be seen as an intimidating task, however. The good news is that by understanding how your brain works and implementing a few simple strategies, you can start building your first habit of self-discipline today.

If you prefer video, I covered this topic here in “3 Ways to Build Self Discipline, Self Discipline”

1. Start Small

One of the biggest mistakes people make when trying to build self-discipline is setting goals that are too ambitious from the start. While it’s great to aim high, trying to achieve a massive goal without a solid foundation of discipline can lead to burnout and failure. Instead, start small.

For example, if your goal is to run three miles every day, begin with a short walk or a brief jog. This helps you build the habit without overwhelming your willpower and motivation. As this smaller habit becomes second nature, you can gradually increase your effort, making it easier to reach your ultimate goal. The key is to create success with a “baby habit” first, which builds momentum and self-discipline over time.

2. Use Accountability

Accountability is a powerful tool in building self-discipline. Despite this, many people overlook it. Studies show that 86% of the population is externally motivated, meaning they are more likely to achieve their goals when they share them with others and have someone to hold them accountable. This isn’t a weakness—it’s a strategy.

Consider finding an accountability partner who will check in with you regularly or even join you in your journey. Whether it’s a friend, family member, or coach, having someone to report to can significantly boost your commitment and discipline. If you know you’re going to struggle with a particular goal, don’t hesitate to recruit help.

3. Manage Your Expectations

Many people set themselves up for failure by having unrealistic expectations. They envision a perfect outcome and become discouraged when they don’t achieve it immediately. This can lead to negative self-talk, frustration, and ultimately, giving up.

To counter this, treat yourself with the same kindness you would offer a best friend. Acknowledge that perfection is unattainable and that it will take time to develop new habits. When you face setbacks, remind yourself of the reasons why you started and the long-term benefits of sticking with it. Building self-discipline, like any other skill, takes time and practice. By managing your expectations, you set yourself up for long-term success.

Final Thoughts

Self-discipline is a valuable skill that can be developed with time, patience, and the right strategies. By starting small, using accountability, and managing your expectations, you can build the self-discipline needed to achieve your goals.

Remember, every worthwhile accomplishment takes time, and the journey is just as important as the destination. With consistent effort and a positive mindset, you can create the self-discipline necessary to reach your full potential.
