How to Balance Free Will and Divine Guidance for a More Joyful Life

Have you ever wondered whether your life is entirely up to you—or if everything happens for a divine reason? There are a couple of philosophies that offer very different perspectives, but the truth lies in the balance. By understanding free will, divine guidance, and the role of your intuition or inner wisdom, you can uncover your soul’s purpose and create your most joyful and fulfilling life possible.

Existentialism and Your Most Joyful Life

In this article we are exploring existentialism and how this philosophy connects to creating your most joyful life. Existential philosophy holds that every individual is responsible for deciding and creating their own purpose and happiness. In this view, The Creator inserts us into this life and then steps aside, leaving us to define our own life course.

On the opposing side of this philosophy is the belief that everything is divinely orchestrated; and that every event, good or bad, happens for a reason. The truth, as with most things, lies somewhere in the middle.

Free Will and Divine Guidance: A Middle Path

Before we arrive into our life on earth, we are each a divine being of light. You might have heard this called higher consciousness, angels or spirit guides. We have autonomy and contribute to the planning stage for what will be our life on earth. We decide what we would like the life to entail for overarching experiences and our life’s purpose.

But then we arrive into this 3D existence and forget who we are and what our intention for this life was. The part of our consciousness that remembers is often referred to as our higher consciousness, intuition or inner wisdom. It is part of us and tries to guide us through life.

Our conscious awareness does not always recognize the guidance however, or can choose to ignore that guidance – and often does. This is because we have free will.

Regardless of what we planned in advance for this journey of our life, our conscious awareness, which is the part of our consciousness that we recognize as “us,” will choose the paths we take and what our experience ultimately becomes.

This means:

  • Not everything that happens has a divine reason.
  • Many events occur due to choices—our own or someone else’s.
  • Divinity offers guidance but does not control our free will.

Of course we are not left without support. Our angels, or what you may call spirit guides, often send nudges, synchronicities, opportunities and connections to lead us toward our soul’s chosen path. Ultimately it is always our choice to take advantage of them, however, and quite often we do not.

Why Inner Wisdom Matters for a Joyful Life

This is why connecting with your inner wisdom, or intuition, is such an impactful skill for you to develop. Your inner wisdom can help you on a daily basis, and throughout your days to discern your best decisions and actions. Recognizing it is a skill that you can develop and the more that you practice, the easier it becomes to trust it. This guidance includes following your most aligned path and making choices aligned with your soul’s plan.

When you tune in to this guidance, you don’t lose your freedom of choice — you simply gain clarity. With that clarity comes the ability to see the path that leads to the most fulfillment and joy. And while you’re always free to ignore the guidance of your inner wisdom, why would you? Living your life’s purpose is how you will experience the most fulfillment.

Putting It Into Practice

  • Pause and reflect: Set aside daily time to be curious and ask questions of your inner wisdom.

  • Notice: Pay attention to ideas or divine inspiration that seem to come to you out of the blue, when you are not thinking about it.

  • Practice: The more you ask questions and notice answers coming to you out of the blue, the more quickly you will learn to trust your guidance.

  • Act on clarity: Once you recognize your inner wisdom, take the actions it is pointing you toward.

The choice is always yours. Developing clarity through clear inner wisdom is the greatest skill you can give yourself. Fear of doing something new will fall away as you learn to trust and lean into action on your divine path.
